eftersøgning
The active search by law enforcement or other authorities for a person, object, or evidence in connection with a criminal investigation, apprehension, or missing person case.

Definition
Eftersøgning refers to the procedural act of searching for or seeking out individuals, items, or information relevant to a criminal matter. In true crime contexts, this typically encompasses law enforcement efforts to locate suspects who have fled, victims whose whereabouts are unknown, missing persons, or physical evidence connected to an offense. The term is commonly used in Scandinavian criminal justice systems but does not have a direct technical equivalent as a formal legal term in U.S. federal criminal procedure.
In American federal practice, the closest procedural analogs involve arrest warrants, manhunts, and investigative searches. When federal authorities issue an arrest warrant and actively seek a defendant, they engage in what would functionally constitute an eftersøgning. Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure govern the timeline and procedures once such a person is apprehended, requiring that arrested individuals be brought before a magistrate judge without unnecessary delay.
The concept encompasses both targeted searches for known individuals and broader investigative efforts to identify and locate unknown perpetrators. Modern eftersøgning efforts may involve collaboration between multiple agencies, use of surveillance technology, public alerts such as BOLO (Be On the Lookout) notices, and coordination with international law enforcement through channels like Interpol when suspects cross jurisdictional boundaries.
In missing person cases that later develop criminal dimensions, eftersøgning describes the transition from search-and-rescue operations to criminal investigative searches. The urgency and resources devoted to an eftersøgning typically correlate with factors including the severity of alleged crimes, perceived danger to public safety, and the likelihood that delay will allow evidence destruction or suspect flight.
