Joshua James Corbett, the man convicted of stalking actress Sandra Bullock, died on May 2, 2018, during a standoff with law enforcement at his home in the 2400 block of Harmony Place in La Crescenta, California. The 42-year-old's death came as an LAPD fugitive warrant team arrived to serve an arrest warrant after he failed to appear for a probation progress report hearing the previous week.
Corbett's criminal obsession with Bullock began years earlier. In June 2014, he broke into the actress's West Los Angeles home while she was alone inside. Bullock, hearing the intrusion, managed to lock herself in her bedroom closet and call 911. "I'm locked in my closet. I have a safe door in my bedroom, and I've locked it, and I'm locked in the closet right now," she told the emergency dispatcher.
When police arrived and arrested Corbett at the scene, investigators discovered he was carrying multiple photographs of Bullock and a letter in which he portrayed himself as her husband. A subsequent search of his own residence revealed an alarming arsenal: two dozen illegal firearms and ammunition. Authorities alleged his intent was to sexually assault the actress.
In May 2017, Corbett pleaded no contest to felony stalking and burglary. The court sentenced him to five years of probation and ordered him to seek treatment at a mental-health facility, including confinement to a facility in Tarzana. He was released from that facility in June 2017. A 10-year protective order was issued to protect Bullock, valid until 2022.
Corbett's case had faced complications earlier when a judge halted proceedings in January 2017 due to concerns about his mental competence. By March, his bail was lowered from the initial $2.2 million, though he remained in custody.
On April 23, 2018, Corbett missed his probation progress report hearing. This absence triggered probation revocation and the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest. Officers arrived at his La Crescenta home around 6:45 to 7 a.m. on May 2 to serve the warrant.
