An early October 2021 hack of Twitch's internal systems exposed the closely guarded financial information of thousands of content creators, revealing the staggering earnings of the platform's top streamers.
The breach included source code, user passwords, and comprehensive payout data spanning from August 2019 through October 2021. The leaked information covered Twitch revenue streams including subscriptions, advertising income, and Bits—the platform's virtual currency—but excluded external income sources such as sponsorships, donations, merchandise sales, or earnings from other platforms like YouTube.
Among the most striking revelations was the earnings of Critical Role, a professional livestream channel featuring voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons. The group topped the leak data with payouts exceeding $9.5 million over the two-year period, despite experiencing a significant hiatus from March through July 2020 due to COVID-19 lockdowns.
The breach exposed payouts for the top 100 highest-earning streamers publicly, with data for the top 10,000 creators also compromised. Across this wider dataset, the top five streamers each received over $5 million in Twitch payouts during the period covered by the leak.
Individual earnings figures highlighted the scale of top-tier streamer income. xQc, one of the platform's most popular streamers, earned approximately $800,000 in payouts during a single month in the final year of the leaked data. Similarly, Asmongold revealed that his own payout records showed $2.6 million in earnings during the period, with additional context suggesting he had been generating thousands of dollars daily through text-to-speech donations before disabling that feature.
A notable pattern emerged in the data: payouts were consistently higher during the final year covered by the leak compared to the full two-year period, suggesting growth in both streamer audiences and platform revenue during that timeframe.
The leak provided unprecedented transparency into streamer compensation, allowing the public to see exactly how much top creators earned directly from Twitch. However, observers noted that these figures represented only a portion of successful streamers' total income, as many supplement platform earnings with sponsorships, brand partnerships, and other revenue streams not captured in the Twitch payout data.
