Quick Facts
A Deadly Cocktail in the Name of Marriage
Kouri Richins from Utah was found guilty in March 2026 of murdering her 39-year-old husband Eric Richins by administering him a lethal dose of fentanyl in a cocktail in March 2022. The 35-year-old mother of three had, according to prosecutors, carefully planned the murder and obtained the deadly substance through an acquaintance.
Eric Richins was found dead in the couple's home, and the cause of death was determined to be an overdose of the synthetic opioid. The investigation revealed that Kouri Richins had purchased fentanyl prior to her husband's death and mixed it into a drink that she served to him.
From Grieving Widow to Suspected Murderer
What made the case particularly noteworthy was Kouri Richins' behavior after the killing. Just one year after her husband's death, she published the children's book "Are You With Me?", which was intended to help children understand and cope with grief after losing a parent.
The book was marketed as a personal project, in which Richins shared her own children's experiences of losing their father. She gave interviews to local media and presented herself as a strong, grieving widow attempting to help other families through similar trauma.
Economic Motive Revealed
Following her arrest in 2023, a darker picture began to emerge. Police found evidence that Kouri Richins had a clear financial motive to kill her husband. She stood to inherit millions from his life insurance and business interests.
Moreover, according to witness testimony, the couple had experienced serious marital problems, and Eric Richins had allegedly considered divorce shortly before his death. The trial revealed that Kouri had made changes to his life insurance policies without his knowledge.
