The case behind the episode
The case of Natascha Kampusch began on an ordinary school route but ended in a nightmare that lasted over eight years. The perpetrator, Wolfgang Priklopil, had prepared a soundproof basement under his garage, where Kampusch was kept isolated from the outside world. During her captivity, she was subjected to systematic physical and psychological abuse, while the police searched for her for years without success. The investigation was marked by several errors, including an early tip about Priklopil's white van, which was never followed up by the Austrian authorities.
On August 23, 2006, Natascha Kampusch finally managed to escape when Priklopil was momentarily distracted by a phone call while she was vacuuming his car. She ran through the neighborhood asking for help, leading to an immediate police action. Shortly after her escape, Wolfgang Priklopil committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train, leaving many unanswered questions about his motives and whether he had accomplices.
