Fifteen: Inside the Daniel Marsh Murders from CBS 48 Hours sheds light in its first episode on one of the most disturbing cases in California's recent legal history. On April 14, 2013, the elderly couple Oliver 'Chip' Northup Jr. and Claudia Maupin were found brutally murdered in their home in Davis, California. The perpetrator turned out to be the just 15-year-old neighbor, Daniel Marsh, who lived only two houses away from the victims. The episode describes the technical evidence at the crime scene and the shocking cold-bloodedness with which Marsh committed the premeditated murders.
The case behind the episode
The case of Daniel Marsh shook the community in Davis due to the extreme brutality of the crime and the young age of the perpetrator. Marsh had struggled with dark impulses for years and later told investigators that he had fantasized about becoming a serial killer since the age of 10. The night he broke into Northup and Maupin's home, he randomly chose their house to satisfy his urge to kill. The victims suffered a total of 128 stab wounds while they lay asleep in their bed. After the murders, Marsh chose to further mutilate the bodies by inserting objects, including a mobile phone and a drinking glass, into their bodies. During the trial against Daniel Marsh, a forensic psychologist testified that Marsh scored exceptionally high on the psychopathy test, placing him among the most dangerous individuals the psychologist had ever evaluated. Marsh was convicted as an adult in 2014 and received a sentence of 52 years to life, a sentence he is currently serving at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.
