Sarah Koenig from This American Life began investigating a 15-year-old murder case from Baltimore in October 2014. When she concluded Serial season 1 in December that same year, she had not only created a media phenomenon—she had set in motion a legal process that would last eight years and end with a release.

Adnan Syed was arrested in 1999 for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, 18. In 2000, he was sentenced to life in prison. But when Sarah Koenig began digging into the case in 2014, she uncovered problems that would prove fatal to the conviction.

A Podcast That Became a Weapon

Serial raised fundamental questions about due process in Syed's case. Koenig documented witness testimonies that no one else could confirm, a defense attorney who never called a crucial alibi witness, and cell phone data that directly contradicted the prosecution's timeline for the .

murder

The podcast reached 5 million downloads faster than any podcast had ever done. But behind the numbers, something more important happened: Lawyers, legal experts, and ordinary citizens began questioning the conviction. The public attention forced the legal system to look at the case again.

true crime podcasts suddenly became a tool not just for entertainment, but for real investigative journalism with concrete consequences.

The Road to Freedom

The questions Serial raised triggered a legal review that stretched over years. Defense attorneys found new life in the case. Evidence was re-examined. Witnesses were questioned again.

In September 2022—eight years after Serial—the Maryland State's Attorney requested that the conviction against Syed be vacated. That same month, Adnan Syed was released after 23 years behind bars. In March 2023, all charges against him were officially dropped.

It is rare to draw a direct line from a media product to a release. But in Syed's case, the line is crystal clear: Without Serial, he would likely still be in prison.

The Power of Podcasting as a Journalistic Tool

Serial demonstrated that the podcast format had unique strengths for investigative journalism. Where traditional media operate with short articles or segments, Koenig could spend hours diving into details, following leads, and presenting complex chains of evidence.

Listeners followed along week by week, episode by episode, as Koenig uncovered layer upon layer of information. It created an engagement that traditional media rarely achieve—and it was precisely this engagement that created the political and legal pressure necessary to reopen the case.

Serial proved that journalism in podcast form could be just as serious and impactful as newspapers and television—perhaps even more impactful.

The Victims of the Case and Ethical Questions

But Serial also raised important ethical questions. Hae Min Lee's family has expressed criticism of the podcast and their desire for privacy. They had to relive their daughter's murder in public.

This dilemma between criminal justice and victims' rights became part of the larger debate Serial started: Where is the line for what journalism may do in pursuit of the truth?

What Did This Case Change?

Serial fundamentally changed both the media world and the legal landscape. On the media front, the podcast defined what serious podcast journalism could be. It started the global true crime podcast wave that continues to this day—from The Jinx to Making a Murderer and thousands of other productions.

But more important was the legal precedent Serial created: A podcast can change the outcome of a trial. Public attention, created by thorough journalism, can force the legal system to look at old cases with new eyes.

For Adnan Syed, it meant the difference between a lifetime behind bars and freedom. For the justice system, it meant a reminder that no verdict is infallible, and that journalistic scrutiny deserves respect as a watchdog.

For the true crime genre, it meant a lever from pure entertainment to a force that can actually change people's lives.

The Legacy of Serial

Today, podcasts in the English-speaking world are often measured against Serial. Can they reach the same depth? The same impact? The same balance between storytelling and journalism?

But most important of all: After Serial, we know that podcasts are not just entertainment. They are a tool that can move mountains—or at least open prison doors for people who perhaps never should have been there.
