Jack the Ripper Tours in London — Walk Whitechapel's Murderous Streets

In the autumn of 1888, an unidentified perpetrator committed a series of brutal murders in Whitechapel, East London — leaving the world with a mystery that has never been solved. Today, several guided tours of the area offer a factual and atmospheric walkthrough of the streets where the murders took place, and the poverty and chaos that defined the Victorian East End.

Whitechapel in 1888 — a neighbourhood under terror

At the end of the 19th century, Whitechapel was one of London's poorest and most overcrowded districts. Immigrants, labourers and the homeless lived side by side in cramped tenements and street kitchens. It was in this environment that Jack the Ripper — a name never linked to a confirmed individual — committed his crimes. The murders created what tour operators describe as a genuine "reign of terror" in the area, sending shockwaves through Victorian society as a whole. The perpetrator was never identified, and the case remains officially unsolved.

Today, Whitechapel is a vibrant, multi-ethnic neighbourhood, but the traces of 1888 are still present — in the streetscape, in the old buildings, and in the locations the tours lead visitors to.

Four guided tours you can book

On Viator's overview of Crime Tours in London, you will find several active Jack the Ripper tours with free cancellation and high recommendation rates. Here is a rundown of the verified options:

Jack the Ripper Guided Tour with Ripper-Vision is a one-hour-and-45-minute tour that starts at Aldgate East and ends at 101 Commercial Street near Spitalfields Market. What sets this tour apart is its use of so-called RIPPER-VISION — projections of Victorian Whitechapel streets that give a visual sense of what the neighbourhood looked like in 1888. Prices start from $28 per adult. The tour has earned a Badge of Excellence on Viator.

Jack the Ripper Walking Tour (2 hours) is one of the most highly recommended tours, with a recommendation rate of 99% and a Badge of Excellence. The tour covers the streets of East London and Whitechapel where the victims were found, following the Ripper's route. Prices start from $23 per adult, and the tour is flagged as one that frequently sells out.

The Original Jack the Ripper: Guided Tour starts at the western entrance to Altab Ali Park — at the memorial to St. Marys Whitechapel Church on the corner of White Church Lane and Whitechapel High Street — and ends at the historic pub The Ten Bells at 84 Commercial Street. The tour lasts two hours, has a maximum of 25 participants, and costs from $26.98 per adult. The recommendation rate is 96%.

Ultimate Jack the Ripper: Guided Tour of London follows the same route from Altab Ali Park to The Ten Bells, placing particular emphasis on historical context over sensationalism. The tour lasts two hours and costs from $13.49 per adult, with a recommendation rate of 97%.

Please note that none of the tours are wheelchair accessible, but all are located close to public transport.

Key locations on the route

Several of the tours begin at Altab Ali Park, where the memorial to St. Marys Whitechapel Church stands on the corner of White Church Lane and Whitechapel High Street. The park is today named after Altab Ali, a Bangladeshi textile worker who was murdered in the area in 1978 — yet another layer of criminal history in a neighbourhood that has seen more than its share of violence.

The tours typically conclude at The Ten Bells at 84 Commercial Street, a pub that was already in operation during the Ripper's murder spree in 1888, and which is closely tied to the neighbourhood and its history from that period.

Practical information

All four tours are conducted in English and offer free cancellation. Prices and exact departure times may vary — check the current listings and book your place directly on Viator, where you will also find up-to-date prices in your currency. The tours take place in Whitechapel and the East End and are easily accessible by London Underground.

Whether you opt for the shortest tour at under two hours or one with visual aids such as RIPPER-VISION, a walk through Whitechapel is one of the most authentic ways to understand what happened here more than 130 years ago — and why the mystery continues to captivate the world to this day.
