Quick Facts
What is the series about?
British Murders (Sky Crime, 2025) dedicates its second episode in the fifth season to one of the most shocking cases in British criminal history. The documentary series explores how the then 18-year-old Brian Blackwell transformed from a gifted student with a bright future into a brutal double murderer. Through reconstructions and expert interviews, the series charts the weeks in 2004 when Blackwell lived a double life funded by fraud against his own parents, culminating in an extreme act of violence in the family's home in Liverpool.
The real case
The real case of Brian Blackwell began on July 25, 2004. After his parents, Sydney and Jackie Blackwell, discovered his extensive financial fraud — including forged credit card applications and unauthorized use of their savings — a confrontation escalated into a brutal assault. Brian Blackwell attacked his parents with a claw hammer and a 10-inch carving knife. Sydney Blackwell was stabbed 30 times, while Jackie Blackwell received 20 knife wounds.
The most striking aspect of the case was Blackwell's behavior immediately after the murders. He took a shower, packed his suitcase, and picked up his girlfriend to embark on a planned luxury holiday to the USA. While his parents' bodies lay undiscovered in the house in Liverpool, Brian Blackwell spent thousands of pounds on hotels and expensive dinners in New York and Florida. He maintained the facade of a successful young man until the police discovered the bodies several weeks later.
