The Jinx HBO documentary Robert Durst New York

Amerikas mest berygtede forbrydelser der fascinerede verden

The case of JonBenét Ramsey stands among the most perplexing unsolved murders in American history. On December 26, 1996, the six-year-old beauty pageant winner was discovered in the basement of her family home in Boulder, Colorado. She had suffered a blow to the head and died by garrote—a crude weapon fashioned from a paintbrush and cord. The child was found bound, gagged, and showing signs of sexual assault. Her mother, Patsy Ramsey, called 911 to report the discovery. Nearly three decades later, no arrests have been made, and the case remains one of the most searched true crime stories in America.

In stark contrast, the conviction of Chris Watts in 2018 brought closure to an equally horrifying crime. Watts murdered his pregnant wife, Shanann, and their two daughters. Initially, he attempted to blame his wife for the children's deaths—a claim he later recanted in a full confession. The case became the most searched true crime story in Colorado and continues to dominate interest across multiple states.

The O.J. Simpson trial, which concluded approximately a decade before the Caylee Anthony case, captivated a global audience. Simpson stood accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. Despite overwhelming public suspicion, Simpson was acquitted—a verdict that shocked millions worldwide. The trial's infamous moment came when defense attorney Johnnie Cochran delivered the phrase that would echo through legal history: "If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit." The case ranks second in top true-crime searches across four American states: Michigan, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Oregon.

The disappearance of Caylee Anthony on July 15, 2008, launched one of the most high-profile missing person cases in modern history. Her grandmother, Cindy Anthony, placed the 911 call reporting the toddler missing. The subsequent investigation and legal proceedings made the Caylee Anthony case a top-searched true crime story across six American states and Washington, DC.

America's serial killers have earned their own dark chapters in true crime history. Ted Bundy, who killed at least 20 women during the 1970s, eventually confessed to 30 homicides after maintaining his innocence for over a decade. The actual victim count remains unknown. Bundy holds the distinction of being the top-searched true crime case in Utah.

Jeffrey Dahmer's crimes horrified the nation: he murdered 17 young men through rape, dismemberment, and cannibalism. Though sentenced to life in prison, Dahmer met a violent end when another inmate beat him to death.

The Golden State Killer, Joseph DeAngelo, remained unidentified for decades until 2018, when investigators traced crime scene DNA through GEDmatch and connected it to distant relatives. DeAngelo pleaded guilty in 2020 to 13 counts of murder and admitted to dozens of sexual assaults.

John Wayne Gacy operated his killing spree beneath the surface of suburban normalcy. Using his construction business to lure teenage boys to his home at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue, Gacy killed between 26 and 29 victims. Investigators discovered bodies buried four feet deep in the crawl space beneath his home.

The West Memphis Three case represents one of America's most troubling miscarriages of justice. Despite dubious evidence, the three defendants were convicted. They remained incarcerated until 2011, when they were released on an Alford plea. The true perpetrator or perpetrators of the crime remain unidentified to this day.

Richard Ramirez, known as the "Night Stalker," terrorized the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas, killing 13 to 14 people through home invasions, rape, and murder. He received a death sentence and died of lymphoma in prison.

British physician Harold Shipman holds the distinction of being history's deadliest serial killer, with 218 confirmed victims. He died by suicide in his prison cell.
