Background

On January 31, 2022, German police were shaken by a tragic crime that would mark one of the worst attacks on officers in recent German history. Two young police officers, aged 24 and 29, were shot and killed during a routine traffic control on a rural road near Kusel in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The murder proved to be planned and professionally executed, which significantly intensified the investigation.

The two officers were on patrol during the night between January 30 and 31 when they spotted the vehicle carrying the two later-accused men. The stop was meant to be routine, but it ended tragically. The two officers were shot multiple times, and the cause of death was later confirmed as gunshot wounds.
