Dorothy Arnold, a 25-year-old heiress from one of New York's prominent families, vanished in December 1910 from Manhattan. Her disappearance would become one of the earliest high-profile missing person cases in American history, capturing newspaper headlines and public attention across the country.

Arnold's status as a wealthy heiress made her disappearance particularly newsworthy. In the early 20th century, such cases involving members of Manhattan's elite families were rare enough to generate significant media scrutiny. Yet despite the resources available to her family and the attention her case received, Dorothy Arnold simply disappeared without leaving a trace.

The years that followed yielded no answers. No body was ever found. No credible witnesses came forward with information about her final moments. No ransom demands emerged if foul play was suspected. The investigation, conducted in an era before modern forensic techniques or widespread coordinated law enforcement resources, ultimately led nowhere.

22 January 1911

Polizei wird informiert

Über einen Monat nach dem Verschwinden unterrichtet die Familie erstmals offiziell die Polizei – eine Verzögerung, die später kritisiert wird.

The Arnold case would go on to exemplify the challenges faced by investigators at the turn of the 20th century. Without the investigative tools and communication networks available to modern law enforcement, authorities struggled to piece together what had happened. The case grew colder as time passed, eventually fading from public memory despite remaining unsolved.

Today, more than a century after her disappearance, Dorothy Arnold's fate remains a mystery. Her case endures as a reminder of how completely someone can vanish, and how thoroughly a life can be erased from the historical record—even one as seemingly notable as that of a Manhattan heiress.

The questions surrounding Dorothy Arnold's disappearance have never been answered. Whether she met with foul play, chose to disappear of her own accord, or fell victim to some other misfortune remains unknown. Her case remains open, a ghost story embedded in New York's true crime history.
