The Attack
On 19 January 2025, the city of Aschaffenburg in north-western Hesse was struck by a dramatic knife attack in broad daylight. Without warning, a man assaulted several people at public locations in the city centre, killing at least two and wounding a number of others.
The attacks took place across multiple sites within the city, triggering widespread panic and a large-scale police operation. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and horror as emergency services were immediately alerted.

The Perpetrator
The perpetrator was apprehended by police on the same day, shortly after the attacks took place. He was arrested at the scene or in its immediate vicinity. Police identified him and launched an investigation into his motives and mental state.
Details about the perpetrator — including his identity, background and any prior convictions — were subsequently made public through official charges and media reporting. The investigation focused on whether the attack had been planned or was spontaneous, and on whether there were indications of radicalisation or psychiatric illness.
Police Operation and Response
A large police contingent was deployed to the area. The Aschaffenburg area was locked down and security cordons were established around the attack sites. Ambulances and medical personnel were called to assist the wounded.
Emergency services, the fire brigade and local hospitals worked in a coordinated effort to treat those injured. Several people were transported to hospitals in the area with varying degrees of injury.
Victims
Among the victims were both adults and potentially children. The precise identities of those killed and their relationship to the perpetrator were subsequently confirmed through official sources. Next of kin were notified, and psychological support was made available to the bereaved.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
German police launched a thorough investigation into the motives behind the attack. The public prosecutor's office in Aschaffenburg took charge of the case, and the perpetrator was brought before a judge.
Questions surrounding his criminal responsibility, any psychiatric diagnosis and the underlying causes of the violence became central to the investigation. See also mass knife attacks in Germany and perpetrators with psychiatric disorders.
Public and Societal Reaction
The attack shocked Germany and received extensive coverage in international media. Public attention turned to safety in open spaces, and debate arose around the prevention of such violence. The mayor of Aschaffenburg and other local leaders laid flowers and paid tribute to those killed.
Questions of integration and the perpetrator's immigration background were drawn into the public debate, particularly given reports about his residency status. See knife crime and integration in Germany.
