Between 1967 and 1987, Fred West and Rosemary West—a married couple living in Gloucester, England—committed a series of brutal murders that shocked the nation. Operating primarily from their home at 25 Cromwell Street, they tortured, raped, and murdered at least 10–12 young women and girls, often keeping bones and other remains as grotesque mementos of their crimes.

Fred West was born on 29 September 1941. Rosemary Pauline Letts was born on 29 November 1953. The two married in January 1972, though their partnership in crime began years earlier. What made their crimes particularly heinous was not only the violence they inflicted, but the systematic way they transformed their home into a tool of torture and death.

The earliest documented murder attributed to Rosemary occurred in June 1971, when she killed her eight-year-old stepdaughter, Charmaine West. The child's body was dismembered—with fingers and toes removed—and buried beneath the kitchen at 25 Midland Road before the family relocated to Cromwell Street. This pattern of mutilation would become a hallmark of the couple's crimes.

Once established at 25 Cromwell Street in the early 1970s, the Wests began their systematic abuse of victims within the house's walls. In September 1972, they led eight-year-old Anne Marie West into the cellar, where Fred raped her while Rosemary actively encouraged and assisted. This assault became the first in a pattern of repeated abuse against the stepdaughter that would continue for years.

The cellar itself became a dedicated torture chamber. Victims were restrained to mattresses, gagged, raped, tortured, and murdered. The Wests made deliberate modifications to the house to facilitate their crimes—adding hidden rooms, installing a special doorbell, and positioning a red light outside Rosemary's "private" room to signal availability.

Early police intervention might have ended the horrors sooner. In 1973, Fred and Rosemary faced charges related to sexual assaults on underage girls, including Anne Marie and Caroline Owens. However, Fred persuaded a magistrate that the encounters were consensual. Both received only fines, allowing them to continue their crimes largely unchecked for another decade and a half.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, victims continued to disappear into 25 Cromwell Street. The remains of those murdered were buried in the cellar or beneath the garden. The Wests frequently dismembered their victims, removing fingers and toes, and grotesquely kept bones—including kneecaps—as souvenirs.

By 1987, the couple's focus shifted to their own children. Fred began sexually abusing his and Rosemary's daughters, Heather and Mae. When Heather resisted and confided in a friend about the abuse, the Wests murdered her. They dismembered her body and buried it under the patio at 25 Cromwell Street, forcing their son Stephen to help dig the grave. Heather's death marked the last known murder directly attributed to the couple.

The full extent of their crimes remained hidden for years after these events. Fred West died in prison on 1 January 1995. Rosemary West remains imprisoned, convicted of 10 murders. The house at 25 Cromwell Street became synonymous with one of Britain's most notorious cases of serial murder, a grim reminder of the horrors that unfolded behind closed doors.
