Netflix has released the documentary series Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, shining a light on one of the most complex and long-running serial murder cases in modern American criminal history. The series follows the investigation into the so-called Gilgo Beach murders on Long Island, New York, and the prosecution of accused killer Rex Andrew Heuermann, who has been charged in connection with several of the deaths.
The case that changed Long Island
The case began in December 2010, when police were searching for missing woman Shannan Gilbert near Gilgo Beach on Long Island. During that search, officers stumbled upon something far more alarming: the remains of multiple murder victims who had lain hidden for years along a remote stretch of coastline. The discovery triggered a massive that, over the following years, identified a number of victims — many of them women who had worked in prostitution and had been reported missing without attracting significant public attention.
