Dave Cawley's investigative podcast series Cold dedicates each season to a single missing persons case, peeling back layers of evidence, suspect interviews, and investigative dead-ends to understand how three people vanished from their communities—and why their bodies remain undiscovered.

Season 1 focuses on Susan Powell, who disappeared from her home in December 2009. Her husband Josh Powell became the prime suspect, though he was never arrested or formally charged. The case took a dramatic turn when Josh Powell died in a fatal explosion during a supervised visit with his children, effectively closing the door on potential prosecution. Susan's body has never surfaced, leaving her family without answers or closure.

Season 2 examines the case of Joyce Yost, a single mother from the Midwest who relocated to Utah. Her story is one of violence and vanishing: she was kidnapped, raped, and threatened with murder by Doug Lovell more than 35 years ago. Days before Lovell's rape trial was scheduled to begin, Yost disappeared. Despite the absence of her remains, Lovell was convicted of her in what became a landmark body-less . The conviction was further solidified when Lovell later hatched a plot, demonstrating the danger he posed. Like Powell, Joyce Yost's body has never been located.

Season 3 turns to Sheree Warren, who vanished in 1985. Unlike the previous cases, this investigation involves two potential suspects. Charles Warren, Sheree's estranged husband, had made threats before her disappearance. Cary Hartmann, her boyfriend at the time, also drew police scrutiny; he was later convicted in a separate investigation known as the "Ogden City Rapist" case, with DNA evidence playing a key role in that conviction. Cawley's investigation has included searches near Causey Reservoir in Utah, where teams examined locations such as a mountain behind the reservoir and a mound of rocks resembling a grave site. To date, Sheree Warren remains missing.

What unites these three cases is the absence of bodies—a challenge that typically complicates criminal investigations and prosecutions. The Cold podcast explores how investigators, journalists, and families navigate this terrain, following cold leads and examining circumstantial evidence. Cawley's approach combines archival reporting, fresh interviews, and reinvestigation techniques to keep these cases in public consciousness.

The podcast has become a significant platform for true crime audiences internationally, offering detailed narrative accounts rather than quick-hit episodes. Each season's deep dive format allows listeners to understand the complexity of these cases and the persistent uncertainty that haunts families of the disappeared.

While Doug Lovell was successfully convicted in the Joyce Yost case—a rare outcome in body-less murder trials—the fates of Susan Powell and Sheree Warren remain officially unresolved. Their cases represent the particular anguish of missing persons investigations: families left without bodies to bury, justice systems strained by absent physical evidence, and communities marked by unsolved tragedies.

Cold is available on major podcast platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify, with episodes and detailed case information also accessible through the official podcast website.
